Where It All Begins: The Protected Lands of the Argan Forest

There are places on Earth where something truly irreplaceable grows. This is one of them.

Stretching across the foothills of southwestern Morocco, the argan forest is unlike any landscape in the world. Gnarled, ancient trees rise from terracotta soil, their roots reaching metres deep to find water in an unforgiving climate. Stone walls built by hand divide the land into plots that families have tended for generations. And above it all, an almost impossibly blue Moroccan sky.

In 1998, UNESCO designated the Arganeraie Biosphere Reserve — nearly 2.5 million hectares — as a protected region. Not just because the argan tree (Argania spinosa) is found almost nowhere else on the planet, but because this landscape and the people who live within it form a complete and irreplaceable ecosystem.

The trees themselves are extraordinary survivors. They live for up to 200 years. They withstand temperatures above 50°C. In times of drought, they drop their leaves entirely to conserve moisture, then return to life when the rains arrive. They hold the soil together against desertification, provide shade for crops and livestock, and sustain communities that have depended on them for over two millennia.

Our oils come from this land.

We source directly from cooperatives within the biosphere, working with families whose connection to these trees spans generations. When you choose our argan oil, you are supporting the preservation of one of the world's most extraordinary and endangered ecosystems.
